I reali...Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Madeline. I realize that Lauren F. has a lot of fans, male and female, and I can understand why. But, I would still maintain the Fleshman/Oiselle is largely a branding exercise that does its share to ghettoize women's running for the purpose of isolating a young female demographic (for marketing purposes). Sure, she and they give a nod to serious competitive running for women; but, I would liken their support of this side of the sport to, say, Running Room's support for serious competitive running. They really DO support it, but it's definitely not the side on which their financial bread is buttered (that would be the clinics/10 and 1). But, of course, the stakes involved in each case are much different. What Fleshman/Oiselle is doing is far more impactful, I would argue. And in the end, Fleshman's position on equal XC distances really is the litmus test for me. Her arguments are completely incoherent-- and she is the furthest thing from an incoherent person. This makes me think that the root of the incoherence is essentially political; it arises from the type of feminist she actually is-- a very privileged one who has set out to make a living in the "women'r running" niche (which one doesn't do by challenging the existence of women's running as necessarily a "niche" in the first place!) As for her advice that women should be more "badass", the fact that she feels she has to give it, and in those terms, supports the point I was trying to make. No would would ever say something like that to a guy. It would sound silly. To say it to a female athlete (and publicly, which means addressing ALL female athletes) risks being patronizing.
Anyway, I won't go on, as I've already said my piece in some detail (probably too much!). Thanks again for reading and posting. I really do appreciate the feedback! First of all, I fully support equal XC ...Hi Steve,

First of all, I fully support equal XC race distances for girls and boys and acknowledge that companies paint themselves as feminist in order to sell more products.

I don't think it's fair, though, to argue that Lauren Fleshman's writing encourages women to accept feelings of weakness, fear and passivity or that she is trying to keep the status quo to shill her own stuff. One of the reasons she started her blog was to create a women-focused discussion space that she felt didn't yet exist and IMO it's a more thoughtful (certainly less sexist) forum than the alternatives. Blog readers know she has been encouraging female runners to run hard as athletes for years. Here are a few of the questions to which she's responded: “How Can I Get a Faster Kick?” “The Best College for H.S. Runner with Eyes on Pros?” “Is it Too Late to Dream of the Olympics?” In one letter, she encourages a young woman to internalize the following statement: “I am a badass. Pain's got nothing on me. I want to see what I can do!” Isn't that the kind of “badass” advice you argue boys typically receive?

I think so many girls have turned to Fleshman for nearly a decade because of the lack of women coaching track and cross-country. With so few women coaches out there (as I'm sure you're aware), aspiring female elites are turning to the few outspoken pros for advice. I think there's also evidence that girls benefit from same-gender role models more than boys do. At present, I think girls and women DO need more (and sometimes different) supports, especially considering the participation gap still exists. Women like Lanni Marchant are called attention-seeking for wearing “skimpy” competition gear, and on the flip side, told by society and advertisers that their curveless bodies aren't attractive. Women are routinely cat-called by men (and sometimes assaulted) during runs. I would guess that some of the Oiselle messaging on flight, freedom and strength is trying to sell an escape from male expectations and actually combat the ways we are conditioned by society at large to feel fearful and weak. How many young girls are told to be careful when they go for a run at dusk? Or encouraged to wear something over the sports bra when they leave the track? Oiselle is trying to sell running gear to the widest audience of women; I get that. But they also fund and celebrate elite accomplishments and are trying to make the “4:30 mile” a recognized feat similar to the 4-minute mile. There's still so much work to be done. Equalizing distances and making sure prize money is equal... that's the easy stuff. (And not all that easy, it turns out!) It's harder to get rid of the stereotypes, the mansplaining (ahem!), and the deeply entrenched sexism.

I've always appreciated that Fleshman speaks up, even when I don't agree with her arguments, because it's refreshing to read about competitive running from a female perspective. In general, coverage of men's sports and male perspectives on sport still dominate. You've already brought it up here in the comments, but women are very much aware of the history of feminism you presented and the lack of opportunities our mothers and grandmothers had in competitive sport. Rather than tell women how we should be true feminists, men could take more steps to educate each other, listen to our voices and make space for us in their forums. I don't agree with Fleshman's or Gollish's takes in the XC distance debate, but I would never accuse them of being faux-feminists. They still want equal opportunities for girls.Madeleinenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6784767945961794741.post-13149327915127895842017-11-06T12:19:02.416-05:002017-11-06T12:19:02.416-05:00Thanks, Andrew. I put the case pointedly and fully...Thanks, Andrew. I put the case pointedly and fully expect (and welcome) disagreement from some quarters. The women I selected for criticism are amply capable of defending themselves, if they so chose, and the ensuing conversation would be fascinating, I think. One easy point of attack would be that I'm exercising my male privilege (via "mansplaining") by criticizing outspoken women on issue that effect women more than men. In the spirit of the feminism I grew up with, I would, however, reject this. With regard to distance running in particular, the flip side of faux feminism is a kind of "bro" culture, according to whose strictures male runners must be cool, ironic, diffident and generally sophomoric in their approach to the sport. In sport, as in life, gender scripts are prison-houses for all concerned. Let the girls/women be tough and competitive and the boys admit to being sensitive and fragile, and vice-versa, as befits the circumstances and their individual personalities.
